Your Second Heart
Calf Raises: A simple way to boost circulation (no gym required!)
Did you know your calf muscles act like a second heart for your body?
Every time you move them, they help pump blood and lymphatic fluid from your lower legs back up toward your heart. That’s a big deal—especially if you spend a lot of time sitting or standing.
Whether you’re at your desk, in line at the store, or folding laundry, adding a few calf raises into your day can go a long way in supporting your circulation and reducing swelling.
Why Calf Raises Matter
These simple movements can help:
Reduce fluid retention and swelling (aka edema)
Support lymphatic flow
Lower the risk of blood clots
Ease symptoms of venous insufficiency, lymphedema, or lipedema
Relieve that heavy, tired-leg feeling
If you ever feel fullness around your ankles, notice spider veins, or experience general leg fatigue - calf raises might be just the quick reset your body needs.
Let’s try it together
Take a pause and try this right now:
Stand with feet flat on the ground
Lift up onto your toes, stretching your calves
Pause for a breath at the top
Gently lower your heels back to the floor
Repeat 10–15 times (or whatever feels right for you)
Feel that stretch? That’s circulation in action!
Go ahead and do one more round if it feels good. There’s no rush.
When and where to do them
The beauty of calf raises is you can do them anywhere:
While waiting in line (grocery store, bank, ice cream truck 🍦)
At your desk—great excuse for a micro-break
During phone calls or while brushing your teeth
Watching TV or standing at the kitchen counter
No equipment, no workout clothes, no timer required.
BONUS: Got a Rebounder?
If you have a rebounder (mini-trampoline) at home, a few gentle bounces (even 10–15) can wake up your circulation and support lymphatic flow too.
I keep mine by the door so I’m reminded to bounce a bit before heading out or settling in. It’s like giving your body a little boost with every jump.
We don’t always need a big workout to feel better. Sometimes, it's the little, intentional movements sprinkled throughout the day that make the biggest impact.
Take a moment to stretch, breathe, and bounce.
Until next time!
To your lymphatic flow, vitality, and well-being!
Lymphatically yours,
~Barb 💚
