Magnesium in my Wellness Toolkit

Magnesium is one of those quiet, steady supports in my wellness journey.

For most of my life, I’ve been chronically wound-up - my mind always on fire, but not always focused, functional and anxious. Along with diagnosed migraines, heart palpitations, and difficulty both falling asleep and staying asleep, it often felt as though my nervous system was stuck in overdrive. I first turned to magnesium to help settle an overactive mind, improve focus during the day, and make it easier to relax into restful sleep.

Over time, I discovered that its benefits seemed to reach far beyond that. Magnesium helps me with occasional muscle cramps, soothes agitation and a racing heart, supports hydration and digestion, and encourages a greater sense of ease in the face of everyday stress.

Do I still experience these challenges?

Absolutely. Life continues to be life, and my nervous system still lets me know when I'm asking too much of it. My need for magnesium varies with the seasons, daily demands, stress levels, and overall health, but it remains an ongoing part of how I care for myself. Rather than a cure, I've come to think of magnesium as a steady companion - one that helps bring my body and mind back toward balance when they begin to drift.

The Magnesium Deficit

What I've also come to appreciate is that many of us may not be getting enough magnesium in the first place. Modern farming practices have left our soils less mineral-rich than they once were, while our fast-paced, stress-filled lifestyles can increase the body's need for this essential mineral. Certain medications may further deplete magnesium levels, making it even more challenging to maintain optimal stores. Perhaps that's one reason so many people notice a difference when they begin paying attention to their magnesium intake.

In the following three-part series, I'd like to explore magnesium's role in relaxation, pain relief, and nourishment, and share some of what I've learned along the way.

A gentle note: what I share here is for educational purposes and reflects my own lived experience and ongoing learning. It is not intended to replace personalised medical advice. Every body is unique, so if you have specific health concerns or are considering magnesium supplementation, it’s always best to speak with a qualified healthcare professional who can guide you based on your individual needs.
